Quake 2 (N64)

Finally the Nintendo 64 gets a good first person shooter. This has to be the best PC to console conversion I've ever seen. Quake 2 has the graphics, the speed (most of the time), and the quality of the PC game.

To enjoy Quake 2 to it's fullest you really need the 4mb Expansion Pak from Nintendo. The lighting effects add a beautiful sense of realism to Quake 2. While some of the enemy animations could have been more fluid you are usually to busy fragging everything in sight to notice. I personally liked exploding the enemies because of the "debris." The smooth frame rate and beautiful graphics are defiantly pluses for Quake 2.

It might just be me, but first person shooters are the hardest games around. Killing Strogg (the bad guy) after Strogg can get really difficult. Complex levels don't make things any easier. Even though all you do is kill the bad guys and get keys there is plenty, or maybe too much, of a challenge. This game can be one of the more frustrating games on the Nintendo 64. Since it's so easy to die you will have your fair share of frustration. If you could save in the middle of levels this game would be a little bit easier. Instead you will find yourself near the end of a very long level and you are ambushed. You die and restart the level. All that work for nothing.

When you fire a gun in Quake 2 you basically need to feel the vibration. With the graphics as good as they are and the controls as good as they are, you need the extra realism of the Rumble Pak.

Even with its flaws Quake 2 is one of the few Nintendo 64 games that give you just about everything. You should be entertained for at least a month if not longer. If you have some pretty cool friends then the multiplayer mode will give Quake 2 much more value. If you are looking for cheap fun Quake 2 is what you need. Its not the best game on Nintendo 64 but its certainly far from the worst. With great graphics, sound, and value Quake 2 is a must buy for first person shooter lovers. Home >> Games

SOUND: 6/10
- While some of the music makes Quake 2 feel like a movie some of the music makes it feel like Doom. The music in Doom was certainly unimaginative and boring. All of the different cries, yells, grunts, gun shots, and explosions are nice but not perfect.

- The controls help you do this every way possible. You can customize the controls to fit your liking. I prefer the Turok controls but that's just me. The handling is just right and the controls couldn't be better.

- Even though Quake 2 is one of the best multiplayer games on Nintendo 64 it will get boring. There are plenty of multiplayer modes and options, but with shortage of multiplayer levels split-screen action can get pretty boring.

FUN: 8/10
